CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The marina lay deserted, as if the universe had granted them a moment of mercy. At the end of the dock, the Peacekeeper patrol boat was refueling, its crew happily making use of the marina's resources.

“Looks like these guys are here to steal what’s local. That provides us an opportunity,” John said. "Who's a strong swimmer?" John whispered.

A lean and broad-shouldered state trooper known only by the nickname Hoss raised his finger. "I'm your guy."

John looked at the rest of the group. "Stand watch at the marina entrance. Nobody gets in or out. When you hear from me, board the boat and prepare to move upriver in a hurry."

Acknowledging nods circled the group, their faces determined. With that, John and Hoss slinked to the water's edge, soundless as shadows, and slipped into the dark water.

Keeping close to the dock, they swam quietly, taking advantage of the cover. As they reached the fuel pumps, Hoss noticed a crew member fumbling with a power box. Swiftly as a shadow, Hoss raised up onto the dock and lunged, stabbing the man in the lung. As life drained from the man's eyes, Hoss caught the body, discreetly pushed the dead sailor into the water, and watched it drop below the surface as the current took it.

At another end of the dock, John emerged from the water beside a small building. Inside, a Peacekeeper sailor was rummaging through a supply locker. On a desk next to him were bags of chips and cans of soda the man had collected. With one quick, seamless movement, John's knife found the sailors’ throat. The body slumped to the floor, a silent casualty in a quiet war.

Rejoining Hoss on the dock, the two men boarded the patrol boat. They dispatched two more sailors on the rear deck with swift efficiency, their lives snuffed out before they could raise an alarm. The bodies eased over the edge to become fish food.

Inside the small bridge, they found two men asleep in captain’s chairs and another engrossed in an American Playboy magazine leaning against a console. It was one more crew member than John had counted earlier. Fortunately, he had shown himself now and not by surprise. Hoss swiftly drew his gun, leveling it at the three. The crew shocked awake, their eyes widened, and hands shot up in surrender. A man looked at the radio and Hoss held up his free hand and waved a finger ‘no,’ warning the man not to try it.

"Do you speak English?" John pointed to one of the sitting crew members.

The man shook his head, spitting angry words in rapid Mandarin. John's knife moved faster than his denial, stabbing him under the chin. The body dropping heavily to the deck at the feet of his comrades.

He then pointed at the man holding the magazine. "What about you? You read that for the articles or just look at the pictures?"

The sailor looked confused; John held the knife close to his throat.

"I speak English," the man replied, his terror filled eyes meeting John's.
